Perplexity brings autonomous AI agents to your Mac
Perplexity just launched Personal Computer inside a brand-new macOS app, bringing its autonomous agent teams directly to local desktops. The tool operates across local files, native Mac apps, and the web, and even lets you trigger tasks or approve actions from your iPhone. Why it matters: It turns your Mac—especially an always-on Mac mini—into a quiet, 24/7 background AI workforce.

Most AI agents still live inside a browser tab, waiting for you to hit enter. The few that actually touch your local machine usually feel like open-source high-wire acts—fast, cool, and terrifyingly close to deleting your Downloads folder by mistake.
Perplexity just released Personal Computer to all Mac users through a brand-new macOS desktop app. Previously gated behind a waitlist for top-tier Max subscribers, the feature lets Perplexity’s autonomous multi-agent system live directly on your machine, working across local files, native apps, the open web, and over 400 connectors.
Your Mac mini as an AI server
The software doesn't just run everything locally or leave it all in the cloud. Instead, it bridges the two: the agents interact with your local files and native desktop software, but orchestrate heavy tasks, connectors, and context inside a secure sandbox on Perplexity’s servers. If you pair it with Perplexity's Comet browser, it can even drive web tools that lack direct API integrations.
Perplexity is openly nudging users toward a specific setup: run it on an always-on Mac mini. Because it hooks into the Apple ecosystem, you can kick off a complex multi-step workflow from your iPhone while walking the dog, let your Mac mini churn through spreadsheets and PDFs in the background, and simply tap an approval prompt on your phone whenever the agent needs human confirmation.
The company confirmed that its previous Mac app will be deprecated in the coming weeks to consolidate around this new architecture. Anyone can download the new app today for standard search and voice dictation, though running Personal Computer tasks draws against Pro and Max subscription credits. Note that it is only available as a direct download from Perplexity's website, not through the Mac App Store.
Why it matters
We think this is Perplexity’s most aggressive play yet against both standalone search engines and desktop AI rivals like OpenClaw. OpenClaw proved that power users desperately want AI that can touch their actual files and native apps, but granting wide-open local permissions proved too risky for mainstream workflows. By splitting the difference—local file access tied to a managed cloud sandbox—Perplexity is trying to turn agentic computing into something you don't have to baby.
For researchers, writers, and analysts sitting on a mountain of disjointed project folders, it is easily worth testing if you already pay for a Pro plan. Leaving tasks to run asynchronously in the background feels much closer to having a digital assistant than babying a chat window.
The real catch is platform lock-in. Leaning heavily on Mac continuity leaves Windows and Linux users out in the cold for now. And handing over native file access to a third-party agent will still make enterprise IT teams flinch, sandbox or not. But it sets a clear precedent: desktop AI is no longer about answering questions, it’s about doing background chores while your screen is off.
