Perplexity puts its AI agent directly in your inbox
Perplexity just launched Computer in Email, letting users trigger agent workflows simply by emailing, forwarding, or cc'ing computer@perplexity.com. It reads threads and attachments, keeps your memory and permissions intact, and replies with deliverables like Excel models and PDFs. Why it matters: you can now delegate heavy knowledge work without switching tabs.

If half your workday is spent living in your inbox, Perplexity’s latest move might save you quite a few app switches.
Perplexity just launched Computer in Email, bringing its AI agent directly into your mail client. Users can now run end-to-end agent tasks by sending a message, forwarding a thread, or cc'ing computer@perplexity.com. The final deliverables show up as attachments in that very same thread.
Put an AI agent on copy
According to Perplexity, nearly a third of all knowledge work still runs on email. Lawyers exchange redlines back and forth over attachments, while investors iterate through financial models across sprawling threads.
Previously, running an AI workflow meant downloading files, opening a browser tab, and pasting context into a chatbot. Computer in Email cuts out the middleman entirely.
When an email hits computer@perplexity.com, the system first verifies the sender's identity. It only runs using that specific user's connectors and permissions, ensuring strict data access boundaries.
It then reads through the full thread and any attached files. It also taps into Brain, Perplexity's self-improving memory system, pulling in custom team jargon, preferred output formats, and facts established in previous sessions.
Perplexity highlighted several heavy-duty enterprise examples. A private equity associate can forward a CIM and data room thread to generate a first-pass LBO model delivered as an Excel sheet.
A law firm associate can cc the agent on a counsel thread to summarize open issues across three rounds of comments before jumping on a call. Investment banking analysts can even request a full five-year DCF without ever opening a web browser.
Behind the scenes, every email task spins up a standard Computer session complete with an audit trail, viewable on web and mobile. For security reasons, Computer currently replies only to the sender, though reply-all support for Enterprise accounts is rolling out soon.
The feature is available today to all Computer users, following similar integrations launched earlier this year across Slack and Microsoft Teams.
Why it matters
Instead of trying to pull users into a shiny new dashboard, Perplexity is meeting knowledge workers exactly where they already spend their day. In industries like law and finance, the inbox isn't just a communication channel; it is the single source of truth where inputs, discussion, and deliverables live together.
We think this distribution play is smart. It bypasses the friction of adopting a standalone AI app and challenges native workplace agents like Microsoft 365 Copilot directly on their home turf. By packaging complex multi-step outputs into clean attachments like Excel models and PDFs, Perplexity is framing its agent as a reliable back-office associate rather than a casual chatbot.
The main question mark is reliability in messy email environments. Email chains are notorious for conflicting edits and outdated attachments, meaning any hallucination in a financial model or redline summary carries high stakes. But if you already use Computer and spend your morning wrestling with dense email threads, adding computer@perplexity.com to your address book is well worth testing today.
