Computer lands inside Word and Excel

Published Reach 42

Perplexity's Computer agent just arrived inside Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook via native add-ins. The integration eliminates the copy-paste shuffle for the 40% of users exporting to these formats, enabling teams to build financial models, draft documents, and design decks directly from a side panel with cited data from SharePoint and the web.

If you have spent any time using Perplexity Computer over the past couple of months, chances are you spent half that time copy-pasting answers into Microsoft Office.

Perplexity noticed too. According to the company, nearly 40% of Computer users generated outputs intended for Microsoft formats in the last 30 days alone. Everyone wanted the answers, but nobody wanted the tab-switching.

Now, Perplexity is cutting out the middle step. Following its rollout into Microsoft Teams on May 4, the company launched native add-ins across Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Available directly via Microsoft Marketplace, the integration puts Computer inside a native side panel for all Pro, Max, and Enterprise subscribers.

Bringing 20+ models into the sidebar

Instead of relying on a single engine, Computer orchestrates over 20 top models behind the scenes, automatically choosing the best fit depending on whether you are writing an email or crunching numbers.

In Excel, the side panel allows analysts to update comps, financial models, and discounted cash flow models on the fly. Beyond pulling public data from the web, it connects directly into enterprise data stores like Snowflake, FactSet, and company SharePoint files. Crucially for anyone submitting numbers to a boss, every single figure comes with source citations.

In Word, you can draft or rewrite documents using context pulled from external links and internal files. In PowerPoint, it turns raw Word documents, spreadsheets, or open prompts into full slide decks, or refreshes old presentations with updated numbers. Outlook gets an assistant that reads email threads and attachments to draft replies and prep meeting briefs.

On the security side, Perplexity packed enterprise features like SAML SSO, audit logging, and admin controls over connectors, with a strict promise that enterprise data is never used for model training. The company claims Computer has already performed more than $4.4 billion in labor-equivalent work since launching less than three months ago.

Why it matters

For anyone living inside spreadsheets and decks all day, this is an immediate workflow upgrade. The biggest friction with stand-alone AI agents has always been the copy-paste tax: generating a table in an AI browser tab, formatting it, and pasting it into Office only to realize the numbers need double-checking. Having real-time web search and cited financial data directly inside Excel removes that friction entirely.

We think this is also an audacious strategic move against Microsoft. Microsoft charges $30 a month per user for Microsoft 365 Copilot, banking heavily on the fact that no other AI model had native hooks inside Office. By publishing straight to Microsoft Marketplace, Perplexity is turning Office into an open battlefield and bringing multiple leading frontier models right into Copilot's backyard.

It is a smart distribution play because building another standalone collaborative document editor is suicide against Microsoft Office. However, relying on your competitor's marketplace carries obvious platform risks. Microsoft could tighten add-in APIs or aggressively bundle its own Copilot features at any moment. But for now, if you are already paying for Perplexity Pro and work in Office daily, installing these add-ins is an absolute no-brainer.
